Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicle fuel economy is conventionally reported in Gasoline Gallon Equivalent (GGE) - a standardized unit letting CNG fuel economy be directly compared against gasoline vehicle MPG figures.

Formula

GGE Needed = Distance / Fuel Economy (miles per GGE)
CNG Volume (scf) = GGE Needed x 126.67 scf per GGE

Example

200-mile trip at 28 miles per GGE:

GGE Needed = 200 / 28 = 7.14 → CNG Volume ≈ 904.8 standard cubic feet

What Is a GGE?

One Gasoline Gallon Equivalent represents the amount of CNG containing the same total energy content as one gallon of gasoline - approximately 126.67 standard cubic feet of natural gas. This standardized unit exists specifically so CNG vehicle efficiency and fuel cost can be meaningfully compared against conventional gasoline vehicles on an equal energy basis, since natural gas is measured in volume (cubic feet) rather than liquid gallons.
