Fuel Cost Per Mile Calculator
Fuel Cost Per Mile Calculator
Fuel economy ratings alone don't tell you the actual dollar cost of driving - this calculator combines MPG with current fuel prices to give a direct, comparable cost-per-mile figure.
Cost Per Mile = Fuel Price Per Gallon / Fuel Economy (MPG)
Example
Fuel at $3.50/gallon, vehicle rated at 28 MPG:
Cost Per Mile = 3.50 / 28 = $0.125/mile ($12.50 per 100 miles)
Why This Is the Best Way to Compare Vehicles
A vehicle getting 40 MPG costs roughly half as much per mile to fuel as one getting 20 MPG, at the same fuel price - expressing cost per mile rather than just comparing raw MPG figures makes it far easier to estimate total fuel spending over a known annual mileage, or to fairly compare running costs between vehicles with very different fuel economy ratings.
What This Doesn't Include
This figure covers fuel cost only - other per-mile ownership costs like maintenance, insurance, depreciation, and financing typically add up to a considerably larger total cost per mile than fuel alone, so this should be treated as one important input into a broader total cost of ownership comparison rather than the complete picture.
