Propane Consumption Calculator

Sizing a Propane Tank or Regulator

Pure propane has a slightly higher heating value than the propane/butane LPG blend, which matters for precise tank sizing and regulator selection on appliances specified for propane specifically.

The Formula

Propane Consumption = (Heat Input(kW) × 3.6) / Heating Value(MJ/kg)

Pure propane has a heating value around 50.4 MJ/kg, used as the default if not specified.

Worked Example

A 40 kW propane furnace:

Consumption = (40 × 3.6) / 50.4 = 2.86 kg/hr

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter the appliance's Heat Input in kW.
  2. Optionally enter the propane Heating Value (defaults to 50.4 MJ/kg).
  3. Select Calculate to get propane consumption in kg/hr.
