Formula

  1. Fuel Energy Needed (MJ) = (Output MWh x 3600) / Plant Efficiency%
  2. Coal Needed (kg) = Fuel Energy Needed / Coal Heating Value

100 MWh required output, 38% plant efficiency, 24 MJ/kg coal heating value:

Fuel Energy Needed = 947,368 MJ → Coal Needed ≈ 39.47 tonnes

Efficiency Varies by Plant Technology

Older subcritical coal plants typically operate around 33% thermal efficiency, while modern ultra-supercritical designs can reach around 45% - this efficiency gap directly translates into how much coal (and resulting emissions) is needed to generate the same amount of electricity, which is a major driver behind efforts to retrofit or replace older, less efficient coal plants.

Coal Quality Matters Too

Coal heating value (energy content per kilogram) varies significantly by coal rank - lower-energy lignite requires burning considerably more mass to deliver the same energy output as higher-energy bituminous or anthracite coal, which affects both fuel logistics and plant-specific efficiency figures.
