Propane, gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, heating oil — this whole family of fuels comes from the same source, crude oil, separated into distinct products by a beautiful process rooted in chemistry. The Hydrocarbon Family

Fuels like propane are hydrocarbons — molecules of hydrogen and carbon. They form a family that ranges from the smallest, lightest molecules (methane, then ethane, propane, butane) up through the larger molecules of gasoline, kerosene, diesel, and heavier oils. The size of the molecule shapes the fuel's properties: light ones are gases, larger ones liquids of increasing heaviness.

Crude Oil Is a Mixture

Crude oil, straight from the ground, is a jumble of all these hydrocarbons mixed together — useless as is. The refinery's job is to separate this mixture into its useful components, sorting the light from the heavy so each can serve its purpose. From one barrel of crude comes the whole spectrum of fuels, extracted by exploiting how the molecules differ.

Separating by Boiling Point

The central technique is fractional distillation. Heated crude oil is fed into a tall tower; the different hydrocarbons boil at different temperatures, so the light molecules rise as vapor to the cool top while heavy ones stay low, and each is drawn off at the height where it condenses. The tower sorts the family by weight, turning a single crude stream into many distinct fuels.

Propane's Place

Propane sits among the lightest members — a gas at ordinary conditions, collected from the top of the process and from natural gas. Pure propane has a slightly higher energy content than the propane-butane LPG blend, which matters for precise appliance sizing. Its consumption, like other bottled gases, is reckoned by weight from the heat demand it must satisfy.
