Catching Light on Earth
To measure light's speed in a laboratory, experimenters had to manufacture extremely short, precise time intervals. One elegant method sent a beam through the gap of a rapidly spinning toothed wheel, out to a distant mirror, and back; at the right spin rate, the returning light was blocked by the next tooth, and from the wheel's speed and the distance, light's velocity could be computed. Later rotating-mirror methods refined the figure further. Human cleverness had turned an "instant" into a measurable interval.

The number these heroic experiments converged on, roughly three hundred thousand kilometers per second, turned out to be far more than a fact about light. It is a fundamental constant of nature, the ultimate speed limit that nothing can exceed, woven into the structure of space and time themselves.
