Velocity is often used loosely as a synonym for speed, but in physics it's a vector — it carries both magnitude and direction, which matters the moment acceleration or changing direction enters the picture. This calculator handles the two most common ways velocity gets calculated: from distance and time, or from an initial velocity, acceleration, and elapsed time.

The Formulas

Average velocity: v = d / t
Final velocity: v = v0 + a × t

The first form is a straight rate calculation. The second comes from the definition of constant acceleration: velocity increases (or decreases, if acceleration is negative) linearly with time from whatever the object's starting velocity was.

  • Trip and pacing estimates — average velocity from distance and time is the basis of ETA calculations for travel, running, and cycling.
  • Kinematics problems — the final-velocity form is the standard first step in solving free fall, braking distance, and launch problems.
  • Sensor and tracking data — GPS and radar systems compute velocity from successive position readings using the same distance-over-time logic.
