The Soil Profile
Dig a deep hole and the soil reveals itself in horizons. At the top sits the O horizon of fresh and decomposing organic matter; below it the A horizon — true topsoil — dark with humus and teeming with life; then paler subsoil where minerals leached from above accumulate; and finally weathering parent rock. Topsoil is only the upper band, and it is where nearly all the biological action of soil takes place.
A Slow Manufacture
Soil forms from the weathering of rock combined with the accumulation of decayed organisms, worked over by roots, fungi, worms, and microbes. The process is glacially slow — forming an inch of topsoil can take a century or more under natural conditions. That is why erosion is so serious: soil lost in a single storm may represent lifetimes of formation, and why bagged and bulk topsoil is a genuinely mined and blended commodity, not something conjured on demand.

Texture and the Ideal Loam
Soil texture is the proportion of sand, silt, and clay. Sand drains fast but holds little; clay holds water and nutrients but can suffocate roots; silt sits between. The prized balance is loam, roughly equal in its behavior between drainage and retention, with enough structure to hold air pockets that roots need to breathe. When suppliers speak of quality topsoil, they largely mean a workable loam rich in organic matter.
Why Depth Feeds Roots
Because topsoil is where nutrients, moisture, and biology concentrate, the depth you provide sets the root zone. A new lawn or bed spread with only a token layer over compacted subsoil struggles; several inches of good soil give roots room to establish before they hit the harder, poorer material below.
