The poster size calculator scales an image up to a target size and reports the resulting DPI, and if that DPI is low, the honest answer is that the print will look soft. A tempting response is to "upscale", have software enlarge the file to more pixels first. It is worth understanding exactly what that does and, crucially, what it cannot do: no amount of upscaling adds detail that the original never captured. The math forbids it.

An Image Is a Grid of Samples

A digital photo is a finite grid of pixels, each a sample of the color at one point. The image contains exactly the detail those samples captured, no more. When you enlarge it, you must spread those same samples over a larger area, which means inventing the values between the original pixels. That invention is called interpolation, and it is guesswork, educated guesswork, but guesswork about information that was never recorded.

Interpolation Guesses; It Does Not Reveal

Upscaling algorithms fill the new pixels by looking at the neighbors and estimating a plausible in-between value, blending, smoothing, or predicting. The result is a larger file, but the genuine detail is unchanged, merely smeared across more pixels. You cannot recover the texture of a distant leaf or the fine weave of a fabric if the original sensor never resolved it. Enlarging turns each real detail into a bigger, softer version of itself; it does not sharpen what was lost. More pixels are not more information.

The Sampling Limit

There is a deep principle here, familiar from signal theory: a set of samples can faithfully represent detail only up to a limit set by how densely it was sampled. Detail finer than that limit was simply never captured and cannot be reconstructed from the samples afterward. An original image has a hard ceiling of real information, fixed at the moment of capture. Upscaling operates entirely below that ceiling; it can rearrange and interpolate, but it cannot lift it.

The Practical Rule

This is why the calculator reports the native DPI, the resolution the real pixels provide at the target size, rather than flattering you with an upscaled figure. That native number is the truth about how sharp the print can be. If it is too low for the viewing distance, the honest fixes are to print smaller, shoot or scan the source at higher resolution, or accept the softness, not to upscale and pretend.
