Scale Factor = (Final Width(ft) x 12) / Design Width(in)
Recommended Design DPI = 100 / Scale Factor
Example
A 12x18 inch design, scaling to a 6-foot-wide final banner:
Scale Factor = 6.0x → Final size: 6.0ft x 9.0ft, design at ~17 DPI
Why Banners Don't Need 300 DPI
Large-format banners are viewed from a meaningful distance rather than up close like a printed page - working at a much lower design DPI (often well under 100 at full scale) keeps file sizes manageable without producing any visible quality loss at normal viewing distance.

This recommended DPI applies to raster (photo/pixel-based) elements in a design - vector graphics and text scale infinitely without quality loss, so a design combining both should have raster elements exported at this recommended resolution while vector elements remain unaffected by scale.
