Vector Versus Raster: Two Ways to Store an Image

The vinyl banner calculator recommends a surprisingly low design resolution for large banners, and adds a crucial caveat: that resolution applies only to the photo-like elements, while vector graphics and text scale infinitely without loss. That caveat points to one of the most important distinctions in all of computer graphics, the split between raster and vector images. They are two fundamentally different ways of storing a picture, and the difference is exactly why one blows up beautifully to billboard size and the other falls apart.

Two Philosophies of the Image

A raster image stores a picture as a grid of colored dots, pixels, a photograph is the classic example. A vector image stores it instead as a set of mathematical instructions: lines, curves, and shapes defined by equations, with points and paths rather than pixels. A logo drawn as vectors is not a grid of dots but a recipe, "a circle here, this curve there, filled with this color." The two formats hold the same picture in completely different currencies: one in samples, the other in geometry.

Why Vectors Scale Forever

Because a vector image is a set of equations, it has no fixed size. Enlarge it and the equations are simply recomputed at the new scale, a curve is still a perfect curve whether it spans an inch or a hundred feet. There are no dots to stretch and no detail to run out of, so vector art and text stay razor-sharp at any magnification. This is why the calculator exempts them from its resolution warning: for vectors, "resolution" is not even a meaningful constraint. The math redraws crisply at whatever size you demand.

Why Rasters Have a Limit

A raster image, by contrast, contains only the detail its pixel grid captured. Enlarge it and those fixed pixels must spread over a bigger area, so the picture softens or breaks into visible blocks, there is no equation to recompute, only samples to stretch. This is precisely why the calculator computes a recommended DPI for the raster elements: a photo on a banner has a real resolution ceiling, and you need to know whether it holds up at full size. Rasters live and die by how many pixels they started with.

Designing With Both

Real designs mix the two, and the smart approach exploits each format's strength. Keep logos, text, and line art as vectors so they scale flawlessly to banner size, and treat only the photographic elements as rasters that must be supplied at adequate resolution. The calculator's low DPI figure is generous precisely because banners are viewed from a distance, but it applies solely to the raster parts; the vector parts are immune. A banner built mostly from vectors with only carefully-sized photos can be enormous and still perfectly crisp.
