Breakage Is About Sudden Stops

A fragile item breaks not simply from moving, but from stopping too suddenly. When a package is dropped or knocked, the item inside is brought to an abrupt halt, and it is the violence of that sudden stop, the sharp force of decelerating in an instant, that cracks glass and shatters ceramics. The key to protection, therefore, is not to prevent the item from moving but to soften the stop, to spread the halt over a longer moment and a gentler force. Air Is a Perfect Shock Absorber

This is where trapped air excels. Air is compressible, it can be squeezed, which makes it an ideal cushion. When an impact strikes a bubble-wrapped item, the pockets of air compress under the force, and in compressing they slow the item down gradually rather than all at once. The air absorbs the energy of the impact by giving way, extending the stop over a longer instant and dramatically reducing the peak force that reaches the item. The bubbles fail gently so the item does not fail catastrophically.

Why More Layers Help

The compressibility of air explains why the amount of cushioning matters, and why the calculator asks how much wrap each item needs. More layers of bubbles mean more air to compress and a longer distance over which the item can decelerate, further softening any impact. A single thin layer offers modest protection; several layers, or double-wrapping a particularly precious item, provides a much more forgiving cushion. Larger and more delicate items need more wrap precisely because they need more air-filled distance to absorb a shock safely.
