New customer acquisition gets most of the attention in a growth strategy, but retention determines whether that acquisition effort compounds or just replaces what walked out the door. This calculator measures retention directly against the base a business started with, separating customers who stayed from customers who were only ever new arrivals.
The Formula
Retention Rate = (Retained Customers / Customers at Start of Period) × 100
Subtracting new acquisitions from the ending count isolates how many of the original customers were still active by the end — new signups don't get credit for retention they didn't demonstrate.

Note the first row: the total customer count only dropped from 2,000 to 1,800, which looks mild, but 300 of those 1,800 were brand-new customers — the original base actually lost 500 of its 2,000 customers, a 25% churn rate hidden behind a headcount that looks nearly stable.
Where This Calculation Matters
- Distinguishing real growth from churn masked by acquisition — a stable or growing customer count can still hide a retention problem if new signups are covering for departures.
- Customer success team performance — retention rate is a direct measure of how well onboarding and ongoing support are keeping customers engaged.
- Cohort-by-cohort tracking — comparing retention rate across signup cohorts shows whether product or onboarding changes are actually improving stickiness.
