One survey question, one powerful loyalty metric

Net Promoter Score is based on a single survey question - how likely are you to recommend this to a friend, scored 0-10 - then classifies respondents as promoters (9-10), passives (7-8, excluded from the score), or detractors (0-6).

Worked example

For 60 promoters and 15 detractors out of 100 total respondents:

%Promoters = 60% | %Detractors = 15%

NPS = 60 - 15 = 45.0 (Good, positive score)

NPS RangeGeneral Interpretation
Below 0More detractors than promoters
0 - 49Good, positive score
50+Excellent

NPS ranges from -100 (every respondent a detractor) to +100 (every respondent a promoter) - unlike percentage-based satisfaction scores, an NPS of 0 is not neutral in the everyday sense, it simply means equal promoters and detractors.
