Email Click Rate Calculator

Two Different Questions That Both Get Called "Click Rate"

"Click rate" gets used loosely in email marketing to mean two genuinely different things: how many people on the send list clicked something, and how many people who actually opened the email clicked something. Confusing the two leads to comparing numbers that aren't measuring the same behavior. This calculator handles both explicitly.

The Formulas

Click Rate (CTR) = (Total Clicks / Emails Delivered) × 100

Click-to-Open Rate (CTOR) = (Unique Clicks / Emails Opened) × 100

CTR measures performance against the whole delivered list, so it's affected by both subject line and content. CTOR isolates content performance alone by only counting people who already opened the message.

Worked Examples

CTR vs. CTOR for the same campaign
MetricNumeratorDenominatorRate
CTR320 total clicks10,000 delivered3.2%
CTOR320 unique clicks2,400 opened13.33%

CTOR is always higher than CTR for the same campaign, since its denominator (opens) is a subset of CTR's denominator (deliveries).

Where This Calculation Matters

  • Content and offer testing — CTOR is the fairer comparison when testing two versions of email body content, since it controls for differences in open rate.
  • Full-funnel diagnosis — a low CTR with a healthy CTOR points to a subject-line problem; a low CTOR with a healthy open rate points to a content or call-to-action problem.
  • Campaign benchmarking over time — tracking CTR release over release shows whether overall list engagement is trending up or down.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Choose the metric to calculate from the mode selector: Click Rate (CTR) or Click-to-Open Rate (CTOR).
  2. For CTR, enter Total Clicks and Emails Delivered.
  3. For CTOR, enter Unique Clicks and Emails Opened.
  4. Select Calculate to get the corresponding rate as a percentage.
