Email Open Rate Calculator
The First Number Any Email Campaign Has to Clear
Before a subject line can drive a click, a sale, or a signup, it first has to get a recipient to open the message at all. Open rate measures exactly that first hurdle, isolated from everything that happens afterward — which makes it the cleanest way to judge subject lines, sender names, and send timing on their own terms.
The Formula
The denominator is emails delivered, not emails sent — bounced messages that never reached an inbox are excluded, so the rate reflects performance among people who actually had the chance to see it.
Worked Examples
| Emails Opened | Emails Delivered | Open Rate |
|---|---|---|
| 2,400 | 10,000 | 24.0% |
| 850 | 5,000 | 17.0% |
Open-rate tracking relies on a tracking pixel loading, which many privacy-focused mail clients now block by default — treat open rate as a useful trend indicator rather than an exact headcount of readers.
Where This Calculation Matters
- Subject line testing — comparing open rate across two subject line variants isolates which one earns more attention in the inbox.
- Send-time optimization — the same list segment often opens at meaningfully different rates depending on the day or hour a campaign goes out.
- List health monitoring — a steadily declining open rate across campaigns to the same list can signal disengaged subscribers before they unsubscribe or mark messages as spam.
- Sender reputation checks — a sudden drop in open rate independent of content changes can point to deliverability problems landing mail in spam folders.
How to Use This Calculator
- Enter Emails Opened — the count of unique opens recorded for the send.
- Enter Emails Delivered — total emails sent minus any that bounced.
- Select Calculate to get the open rate as a percentage.
