Self-Compassion Score Calculator
Self-Compassion Score Calculator
Rate yourself 0-10 across the three core components of self-compassion identified in psychologist Kristin Neff's widely used research framework.
The Three Components
- Self-Kindness - treating yourself with understanding rather than harsh self-judgment when you struggle or fail.
- Common Humanity - recognizing struggle and imperfection as a shared part of the human experience, rather than something that isolates you.
- Mindfulness - holding difficult emotions with balanced awareness, rather than either suppressing them entirely or becoming completely overwhelmed by them.
Average = (Self-Kindness + Common Humanity + Mindfulness) / 3
Example
Self-Kindness: 6, Common Humanity: 7, Mindfulness: 5:
Average = (6+7+5)/3 = 6.0/10 (moderate self-compassion)
Self-Compassion Is a Skill, Not a Fixed Trait
Research on self-compassion consistently finds it can be developed and strengthened with practice - a lower starting score is simply a common starting point, not a permanent limitation, and is often quite responsive to targeted practices like self-compassion journaling, loving-kindness meditation, or working with a therapist trained in this approach.
An Educational Reflection, Not the Validated Scale
This is a simplified educational self-reflection tool inspired by Neff's framework, not the validated academic Self-Compassion Scale itself (which uses many more specific items), and not a diagnostic instrument of any kind.
