Why Guitarists Use Capos

A capo shortens the vibrating length of every string equally, raising the pitch of all open-position chord shapes by one semitone per fret - this lets a guitarist keep playing comfortable, familiar chord shapes while matching a singer's vocal range or a different key entirely.

Communicating With Other Musicians

Knowing both the "shape key" (what you're fingering) and the "sounding key" (what actually comes out) matters when playing with other musicians, since a keyboardist or horn player without a capo needs the actual sounding key to transpose their own part correctly.
