Song Length Calculator

Counting Bars Into Minutes and Seconds

Songwriters and arrangers often think in bars before they think in seconds — "an eight-bar intro, a sixteen-bar verse" — because bars map to musical structure in a way a stopwatch doesn't. But radio formats, sync licensing briefs, and streaming platforms all care about actual runtime. This calculator converts a bar count directly into minutes and seconds at a given tempo, so a structural sketch can be checked against a target length before a single note is recorded.

The Formula

Total Beats = Bars × Beats per Bar
Duration (minutes) = Total Beats ÷ BPM

Beats per bar defaults to 4 (common time) but can be set to match any meter — 3 for a waltz, 6 for a compound 6/8 feel counted in two groups of three, and so on.

Where This Calculation Matters

  • Hitting a target runtime — a radio edit aiming for 3:30, or a sync cue that must land under 60 seconds, can be planned in bars once the tempo is fixed.
  • Structuring an arrangement — laying out intro, verse, chorus, and bridge lengths in bars, then checking the total against the intended runtime.
  • Album and playlist pacing — estimating total program length across several planned tracks before final mixes exist.
  • Live set planning — bands estimating how long a set list will run based on each song's bar count and tempo.
Duration of a 32-bar section (4 beats per bar) at common tempos
TempoDuration
60 BPM2:08
90 BPM1:25
120 BPM1:04
140 BPM0:55
160 BPM0:48
180 BPM0:43

Computed from Duration = (Bars × Beats per Bar) ÷ BPM × 60, for a 32-bar section in 4/4.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter the tempo in BPM.
  2. Enter the number of bars (measures) you want the duration for.
  3. Enter beats per bar if it differs from the default of 4.
  4. Select Calculate to get the duration in mm:ss format and in total seconds.
