How Song Length Is Calculated
A song's duration depends on three things: how fast it's played (tempo), how many beats fall in each bar (time signature), and how many bars it contains. The formula is:
Song Length (seconds) = Bars × Beats per Bar × (60 ÷ BPM)
Broken into steps:
- Find the length of one beat — divide 60 by the BPM. At 120 BPM, one beat = 60 ÷ 120 = 0.5 seconds.
- Find the length of one bar — multiply beat length by the beats per bar (from the time signature). In 4/4 time: 0.5 × 4 = 2 seconds per bar.
- Multiply by total bars — a 64-bar song at this tempo = 64 × 2 = 128 seconds, or 2 minutes 8 seconds.

Worked Examples
Example 1 — Full pop song
120 BPM, 4/4 time, 90 bars
→ (60 ÷ 120) × 4 × 90 = 180 seconds = 3:00
Example 2 — 16-bar verse
100 BPM, 4/4 time, 16 bars
→ (60 ÷ 100) × 4 × 16 = 38.4 seconds
Example 3 — Waltz (3/4 time)
90 BPM, 3/4 time, 48 bars
→ (60 ÷ 90) × 3 × 48 = 96 seconds = 1:36
Example 4 — EDM build (6/8 time)
128 BPM, 6/8 time, 32 bars
→ (60 ÷ 128) × 6 × 32 = 90 seconds = 1:30

Why Time Signature Changes the Math
The beats-per-bar number from your time signature directly controls how long each bar lasts — this is the detail most people miss.
- 4/4 — 4 beats per bar (most pop, rock, hip-hop)
- 3/4 — 3 beats per bar, waltz feel (bars are shorter at the same BPM)
- 6/8 — 6 beats per bar, but each beat is an eighth note, so it plays faster than 6/4 at the same BPM
- 7/4 — 7 beats per bar (progressive rock, odd-meter tracks)
Two songs at the identical BPM can have very different bar lengths just because of time signature — always check this field before trusting a duration estimate.
