Why This Is an Estimate, Not an Exact Figure
Real groove width varies across a record's surface depending on the loudness and frequency content of the audio being cut - mastering engineers deliberately widen or narrow grooves to balance playback time against audio fidelity, so two records with identical dimensions can hold different actual running times.
The Loudness-vs-Duration Tradeoff
This is why louder, bass-heavy albums are sometimes mastered onto fewer tracks per side or across additional vinyl discs - louder cuts require wider, deeper grooves, physically shortening the amount of program time that fits on a single side.
