Premium pay for holiday work is a policy choice, not a legal requirement
Federal law does not require premium holiday pay in the US, but many employers voluntarily offer time-and-a-half (1.5x) or double pay (2x) for hours actually worked on major holidays as a competitive benefit.
Worked example
For 8 hours worked at $20/hour with a 1.5x holiday pay multiplier:
Holiday Pay = 20 x 8 x 1.5 = 240.0
| Common Holiday Pay Multiplier | Typical Context |
|---|---|
| 1.5x (time-and-a-half) | Most common voluntary policy |
| 2.0x (double time) | Major holidays like Thanksgiving, Christmas, or union contracts |
Always check your specific employer's policy or union contract, since holiday pay eligibility, qualifying holidays, and multiplier rates are not standardized by law and vary considerably between employers.
