Compensating for less desirable hours
Shift differentials add extra pay on top of the base hourly rate for working less desirable shifts - commonly nights, weekends, or holidays - and are especially common in healthcare, manufacturing, and other around-the-clock industries.
Worked example
For a $25 base hourly rate, a 10% night shift differential, over an 8-hour shift:
Differential Pay = 25 x 10% x 8 = 20.00
Total Pay = (25 x 8) + 20 = 220.0 total (20.0 shift differential)
Differential rates and which specific shifts qualify vary significantly by employer policy and industry - always check your specific employer's shift differential structure for the exact rate and eligible hours that apply to your position.
