Combining Two Different Measures Into One Score
Merit scholarships often weigh academic performance and standardized test scores together rather than relying on either alone — a strong GPA can offset a modest test score, and vice versa. Turning those two very different scales into a single comparable index is exactly the kind of calculation that's easy to get wrong by hand. This calculator combines GPA and test score into a single 0–100 merit index, then maps that index to a tiered award.
The Formula
Each component is normalized to its own scale and worth up to 50 points, for a combined index out of 100. If no test score is entered, the index is based entirely on GPA against a 0–100 scale instead. Tiers then apply: 90+ earns 100% of the max award, 75–89 earns 75%, 60–74 earns 50%, 45–59 earns 25%, and below 45 earns 0%.

A merit index of just 0.3 points higher would have crossed into the 90+ tier for the full $8,000 award — illustrating how close tier boundaries can be.
