Setting Expectations Before Someone Clicks
A "12 min read" label at the top of an article does real work: it tells a reader whether they have time for it right now or should save it for later, and it signals how substantial the piece is before they commit to the first sentence. The estimate comes from a straightforward relationship between word count and a typical reading speed.
The Formula
Reading Time (min) = Word Count ÷ Words per Minute
The default reading speed is 225 words per minute, a commonly used estimate for adult silent reading of standard prose. Faster or slower readers, or denser technical material, can be modeled by adjusting the words-per-minute input.

- Blog and article bylines — publishing platforms commonly display an estimated reading time to help readers gauge commitment before they start.
- Content planning — writers targeting a specific reading time (e.g. a 5-minute newsletter) can check a draft against the target before publishing.
- Comparing prose density — the same word count reads faster or slower depending on sentence complexity, which adjusting the wpm input can approximate.
