Raw Score = (0.1579 x % Difficult Words) + (0.0496 x Avg Sentence Length) [+3.6365 if % Difficult Words exceeds 5%]

% Difficult = 8.0%, Avg Sentence Length = 20.0 → Score 5.9 - 4th grade or below
What Makes "Difficult" Words Different Here
Unlike readability formulas based purely on syllable count or word length, Dale-Chall uses a specific reference list of roughly 3,000 words considered familiar to most 4th graders - any word outside this list counts as "difficult," making the formula sensitive to actual vocabulary familiarity rather than just word length or syllable count.
Why This Sometimes Diverges From Other Formulas
A short, simple-looking word can still count as "difficult" under Dale-Chall if it falls outside the familiar word list, while a longer but commonly recognized word might not - this is why Dale-Chall scores can sometimes diverge meaningfully from syllable-based formulas like Flesch-Kincaid on the same text.
