Transcription Time Calculator
Planning to transcribe an interview, podcast, or meeting recording? This calculator estimates the manual transcription time required.
Estimated Transcription Time = Audio Length x Transcription Ratio
Example
A 60-minute recording, standard 4x transcription ratio:
Estimated Time = 60 x 4 = 240 minutes (4.0 hours)
Where the 4x Reference Ratio Comes From
A commonly cited reference ratio for manual transcription is about 4 hours of work per 1 hour of clear, single-speaker audio - this accounts for the repeated pausing, rewinding, and careful listening required to accurately capture spoken content into text.
When Actual Time Runs Significantly Higher
Multiple speakers, heavy accents, background noise, overlapping conversation, or technical/specialized terminology can meaningfully increase this ratio well beyond the 4x baseline - budgeting extra time for recordings with any of these challenges is wise before committing to a transcription deadline.
