Speed Alone Doesn't Tell the Whole Story
Typing tests report words per minute, but raw speed without accounting for mistakes overstates real typing performance — someone typing fast with many errors isn't necessarily more productive than someone typing a bit slower with near-perfect accuracy. Standard typing tests handle this by subtracting an error penalty from the raw speed to produce a net WPM figure, alongside a separate accuracy percentage.
The Formula
Net WPM = Gross WPM − (Errors ÷ Minutes)
Typing tests conventionally define one "word" as 5 characters, regardless of actual word boundaries, since this gives a consistent unit regardless of what text was typed. Net WPM subtracts an error penalty scaled to the same per-minute basis as gross WPM, so a fast but error-prone run scores lower than its raw character count would suggest.
Where This Matters
- Typing certification and job screening — many data-entry and administrative roles set a minimum net WPM and accuracy threshold.
- Tracking improvement over time — comparing net WPM (not just gross WPM) across practice sessions shows whether speed gains are coming at the cost of accuracy.
- Comparing typing tests fairly — since tests vary in length and content, converting to a standardized WPM and accuracy percentage makes results comparable across different tests.
