Caption Reading Speed Calculator
Caption Reading Speed Calculator
Are your captions readable, or flashing by too fast? This calculator checks reading speed against broadcast standards.
Characters Per Second = Caption Character Count / Display Duration(seconds)
Example
An 80-character caption displayed for 4 seconds:
Characters Per Second = 80/4 = 20.0 - Slightly fast, acceptable for most viewers
The Broadcast Standard Reference
Broadcast and streaming caption standards commonly target around 17 characters per second, roughly equivalent to 160-180 words per minute, as a comfortable reading speed for the average viewer.
What to Do When Captions Read Too Fast
Captions displayed faster than this reference rate risk being cut off before viewers finish reading them - splitting a long caption into two shorter, sequential frames (each getting more display time per character) is a standard fix rather than simply cramming all the text into one brief frame.
