Lexical Diversity (TTR) = Unique Words / Total Words
Example
A 13-word passage using 10 unique words:
TTR = 10/13 = 0.769
Reading the Ratio
A ratio closer to 1.0 indicates highly varied word choice with little repetition, while a ratio closer to 0 indicates significant word repetition throughout the text.
Why Text Length Matters for Comparison
TTR naturally decreases in longer texts, since common words like "the" and "and" repeat more often as length grows while genuinely new vocabulary appears less frequently - this makes TTR most meaningful when comparing texts of similar length, rather than comparing a short passage against a much longer one.
