The Calorie on a Food Label Is Not a Calorie
It's a kilocalorie — a thousand of the physics calorie. That single naming collision has confused generations of people trying to reconcile nutrition labels with thermodynamics. This converter keeps the two distinct: cal is the gram calorie at 4.184 joules, kcal is the 4184-joule food Calorie. Alongside them sit the units the rest of the world of energy uses — joules for physics, kilowatt-hours for electricity bills, BTUs for heating and cooling, foot-pounds for mechanical work. All of them measure the same quantity.

Note the ratio of kilojoules to kilocalories: 1 kcal = 4.184 kJ. This is the factor printed on dual-labelled nutrition panels, and it is why the kJ number is always the larger of the two.
Real Uses
- Nutrition labels across regions — European panels lead with kilojoules, American ones with Calories (kcal). Converting between them is a straight multiply or divide by 4.184.
