Why doubling bets is riskier than it first appears

The Martingale system doubles the bet after every loss, aiming to recover all previous losses plus one base unit on the eventual win - but the bankroll required to survive a losing streak grows exponentially, not linearly, with streak length.

Worked example

For a $10 base bet needing to survive 6 consecutive losses:

Bankroll Needed = 10 x (2^6 - 1) = 630.0 bankroll required (next bet would be 640.0)

Notice the 7th bet alone would need to be $640, larger than the entire $630 already required to survive the first 6 losses - this exponential growth is the Martingale system's fatal mathematical flaw, and it's precisely why most casinos also impose table betting limits that cap how far the doubling progression can actually continue.
