Net Price Calculator

The Number That Matters More Than the Sticker Price

Colleges publish an official "net price calculator" for exactly this reason: the advertised cost of attendance rarely reflects what a family actually pays once grants and scholarships are subtracted out. A school with a $60,000 sticker price and a generous aid package can end up cheaper than one advertising $30,000 with little aid attached. This calculator performs that same core subtraction — total cost of attendance minus gift aid — to arrive at net price.

The Formula

Sticker Price = Tuition + Fees + Room & Board
Net Price = Sticker Price − Grants/Scholarships

Only grants and scholarships — aid that doesn't need to be repaid — reduce net price under this formula. Loans are a financing mechanism for the net price, not a reduction of it, which is why they're intentionally left out of this calculation.

A Worked Example

$42,000 tuition, $1,800 fees, $14,000 room & board, $22,000 in grants/scholarships
ComponentValue
Sticker Price ($42,000 + $1,800 + $14,000)$57,800.00
Grants/Scholarships−$22,000.00
Net Price$35,800.00

Where This Calculation Matters

  • Comparing financial aid offers — net price puts offers from different schools, with different sticker prices and different aid packages, on the same footing.
  • Family contribution planning — net price is the actual number a family needs to fund, whether through savings, current income, or loans.
  • Avoiding sticker-price shock — many families rule out schools based on published cost of attendance without realizing how much aid typically closes the gap.
  • Appeal decisions — knowing the exact net price gap between a top-choice school and a more affordable one clarifies whether an aid appeal is worth pursuing.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter the Tuition amount.
  2. Optionally enter Fees and Room & Board.
  3. Enter total Grants & Scholarships (aid that doesn't need to be repaid).
  4. Select Calculate to see the sticker price and resulting net price.
