A Flat-Ground Pace Estimate Falls Apart on a Trail
Walking speed on flat pavement doesn't translate to trail time once elevation enters the picture — a steep 500m climb can add more time to a hike than an extra 5 km of flat trail would. Naismith's Rule, developed in 1892 by a Scottish mountaineer and still the standard starting point for trip-time estimates, accounts for this by adding fixed time penalties for ascent and descent on top of a base flat-pace calculation.
The Formula
This calculator applies Naismith's Rule with its standard ascent penalty, plus a simplified descent adjustment:
The base time comes from dividing trail distance by a flat-terrain walking pace (slow, moderate, or fast). Naismith's original rule adds one hour for every 600 meters of ascent. Descent is handled with a simplified adjustment of 10 minutes per 300 meters of descent, reflecting that downhill travel is generally faster than flat walking but still requires more caution and time than flat ground on steep or technical terrain.

- Comparing route options — two routes of similar distance but different elevation profiles can have meaningfully different total hiking times, which this calculation makes explicit.
