VO2 Max Calculator
Two Field Tests, No Laboratory Required
A true VO2 max reading comes from a lab, breathing into a mask while running on a graded treadmill. Most people never do that test, so exercise scientists developed field-based predictors instead — ones that only require a stopwatch, a measured distance, and in one version, nothing but a resting heart rate. This calculator offers both: the Cooper 12-minute run test and a resting-heart-rate ratio method.
The Formulas
Each method uses a different, independently validated equation:
VO2 Max = (Distance in meters − 504.9) ÷ 44.73
Heart Rate Ratio Method (Uth-Sorensen-Overgaard-Pedersen):
VO2 Max = 15.3 × (HRmax ÷ HRrest)
The Cooper test requires running as far as possible in exactly 12 minutes; the distance covered plugs directly into the formula. The heart rate ratio method instead uses the relationship between maximum and resting heart rate, requiring no running at all — though it is generally considered less precise than a supervised field test.
Where This Calculation Matters
- Baseline fitness testing — the Cooper test is a long-standing, widely used field assessment for aerobic capacity in athletic and military fitness programs.
- Tracking training adaptation — repeating the same test periodically shows whether an aerobic training block is producing a measurable capacity gain.
- Comparing to normative fitness categories — VO2 max results are commonly bucketed into fitness categories to give an accessible interpretation beyond the raw number.
- Estimating without a running test — the heart rate ratio method offers a rough estimate for those unable to perform a maximal running test.
