Marathon Pace Calculator
26.2 Miles Demands a Pacing Plan, Not a Guess
Going out too fast in the first 5K of a marathon is one of the most common and costly mistakes in distance running — by mile 20 the deficit shows up as a full-blown wall. A pacing plan built around the exact marathon distance, split into checkpoints, turns a vague goal like "sub-4 hours" into concrete per-kilometer targets you can actually check against a watch mid-race.
The Formula
Both directions of the calculation use the official marathon distance:
Finish Time = Pace × Marathon Distance (42.195 km / 26.2188 mi)
Whichever direction you're solving, the result comes with a full set of split times at 5K, 10K, 15K, 20K, the half marathon point, 25K, 30K, 35K, 40K, and the finish — each computed by applying the same per-kilometer pace consistently across the full distance.
Where This Calculation Matters
- Race-day pacing bands — having exact split targets at each 5K checkpoint lets you catch an early pacing mistake before it compounds over 26 miles.
- Goal validation — entering a goal pace and checking the resulting finish time confirms whether a target like "sub-4:00" is actually achievable at that pace, or needs adjusting.
- Pacer and pace-band planning — race organizers and pace groups build their official split sheets from exactly this kind of even-pace calculation.
- Training run calibration — long training runs at goal marathon pace rely on knowing precisely what that pace is per kilometer or mile.
Splits at an Even 5:00/km Pace
Computed directly from the formula above, this shows every checkpoint for a steady 5:00/km pace:
| Checkpoint | Split time |
|---|---|
| 5K | 0:25:00 |
| 10K | 0:50:00 |
| 15K | 1:15:00 |
| 20K | 1:40:00 |
| Half (21.0975K) | 1:45:29 |
| 30K | 2:30:00 |
| 40K | 3:20:00 |
| Finish (42.195K) | 3:30:58 |
How to Use This Calculator
- Choose a mode — Goal Finish Time (find pace) or Goal Pace (find finish time).
- Select the pace unit — per km or per mile.
- For Goal Finish Time: enter Hours, Minutes, and Seconds for your target.
- For Goal Pace: enter Minutes and Seconds per unit.
- Select Calculate to see the result along with a full split-time table.
