Distributing a multi-year grant equally across years is simple, but many funders prefer - or require - a budget that escalates year over year to account for inflation and planned program growth.
Formula
With 0% escalation: equal amount each year = Total / Years
With escalation: Year 1 amount scaled so all years sum to the total, each subsequent year growing by the escalation rate

$300,000 total over 3 years at 5% annual escalation:
Year 1: $95,162.57, Year 2: $99,920.70, Year 3: $104,916.73
Why Build In Escalation?
Without an escalation factor, a program's real purchasing power quietly erodes in later grant years if program costs (staff salaries, supplies, rent) rise over time while funding stays perfectly flat - building a modest escalation percentage into a multi-year budget upfront keeps the program's actual buying power roughly consistent across the full grant period, rather than forcing painful mid-grant budget cuts in later years.
