Matching Funds Calculator

"1:1 Match Required" Means More Than It Sounds Like

A grant that requires matching funds isn't handing over the full project cost — it's conditioning its award on the recipient organization bringing its own resources to the table, whether cash, in-kind contributions, or both. The ratio stated in the funding announcement determines exactly how much the recipient needs to raise or contribute, and getting that number wrong at the proposal stage is a common, avoidable way to submit a budget that doesn't actually work.

The Formula

Required Match = Grant Amount × (Match Ratio ÷ Grant Ratio)

A "1:1" match requirement means Grant Ratio = 1 and Match Ratio = 1, so the required match equals the grant amount dollar for dollar. A "2:1" requirement (2 grant dollars to 1 match dollar) means the match obligation is only half the grant amount, while a "1:2" requirement flips that, requiring twice the grant amount in matching funds.

Why Getting the Ratio Right Matters Early

  • Feasibility screening — before investing time in a full proposal, calculating the required match against realistic fundraising capacity tells an organization whether a given opportunity is even pursuable.
  • In-kind contribution planning — many funders allow donated staff time, volunteer hours, or facility use to count toward the match; knowing the exact dollar target needed helps quantify how much in-kind support must be documented.
  • Total project budget accuracy — the true size of a matched project is the grant plus the match, not the grant alone, which affects how the full budget narrative gets framed.
  • Multi-funder stacking — when combining several funding sources to meet one match requirement, knowing the exact target amount keeps the combined ask from over- or under-shooting what's needed.

How the Match Requirement Changes the Total Project Size

Required match and total project budget for a $50,000 grant at common match ratios
Ratio (Grant:Match)Required MatchTotal Project BudgetMatch % of Total
1:1$50,000.00$100,000.0050.00%
2:1$25,000.00$75,000.0033.33%
3:1$16,666.67$66,666.6725.00%
1:2$100,000.00$150,000.0066.67%

Computed directly from the formula above for a fixed $50,000 grant amount.
