The Problem With Kills Alone
A pure kill count rewards only the finisher. But in team combat, victory often depends on players who weaken enemies, control space, distract, or heal — contributions that never show up as a kill. Judging a supportive player by their kills alone badly undervalues them, and can even punish the selfless play that wins games.
Enter the Assist
The assist credits a player who contributed to an elimination without landing the killing blow — dealing damage, providing a buff, or otherwise enabling a teammate's kill. By counting assists, games began to recognize the web of cooperation behind each elimination, rewarding the setup as well as the finish. The scoreboard grew to reflect teamwork.

The Rise of the Support Role
Crediting assists helped legitimize entire playstyles built around enabling others — the support and healer roles central to team games. These players may finish few enemies themselves, yet their contribution is enormous, and a metric that counts assists lets it be seen and valued. Teamwork became measurable, and the invisible work of support gained recognition.
KDA: A Fuller Picture
Combining kills and assists against deaths, the KDA ratio gives a rounder measure of a player's impact than kills alone. It captures both the finishing and the enabling, and it is always at least as high as the plain kill ratio, because it adds the assists a kills-only view discards. For team-oriented games, it is the more honest scoreboard.
