How much revenue does your organization generate per employee? This is one of the most widely used efficiency benchmarks for comparing companies within the same industry.
Revenue Per Employee = Annual Revenue / Total Employees
Example
$10,000,000 annual revenue, 50 employees:
Revenue Per Employee = 10,000,000 / 50 = $200,000
Why Comparisons Only Make Sense Within Industry
This metric varies enormously by business model - capital-intensive or highly automated businesses (like software companies or energy producers) typically show much higher revenue per employee than labor-intensive service businesses (like retail, hospitality, or healthcare staffing), where headcount scales far more directly with revenue generation. Comparing revenue per employee across completely different industries is generally misleading; the metric is most useful when benchmarking against direct competitors in the same sector.
