How the Devine formula works

  1. Start with a base weight of 50kg (male) or 45.5kg (female) at exactly 5 feet tall.
  2. Add 2.3kg for every inch of height above 5 feet.
  3. The result is a reference weight, not a mandatory target.

Worked example

For a male at 175cm tall (about 8.86 inches over 5 feet):

IBW = 50 + (2.3 x 8.86) = 70.5 kg

Frequently asked questions

Where did this formula come from? The Devine formula was developed in 1974 originally to help calculate medication dosages based on body weight, not as a fitness or aesthetic target - it has since become a common general reference point in clinical settings.

Should I aim for exactly this number? Not necessarily - healthy weight varies with frame size, muscle mass, and individual health circumstances. This figure is best used as one general reference point alongside other health measurements, not a strict goal.
