The WHO added sugar guideline
The World Health Organization recommends limiting added sugars, meaning sugars added during food processing or preparation, not sugars naturally present in fruit or milk, to under 10% of total daily calorie intake, with additional benefit suggested below 5%.
Worked example
For someone eating 2000 kcal per day, currently consuming 60g of added sugar:
Limit = 2000 x 0.10 / 4 kcal per gram = 50 g/day limit
60g / 50g x 100 = 120% of the recommended limit
| Daily Calories | 10% Sugar Limit |
|---|---|
| 1,500 kcal | 37.5 g |
| 2,000 kcal | 50 g |
| 2,500 kcal | 62.5 g |
Checking nutrition labels for "added sugars" specifically (a separate line from "total sugars" on many labels) gives the most accurate figure to compare against this limit.
