Why waist-to-hip ratio matters
Waist-to-hip ratio measures how body fat is distributed rather than how much total fat is present, and some research links abdominal ("apple-shaped") fat distribution more strongly to cardiovascular risk than overall body weight alone.
WHO reference ranges
| Risk Level | Male WHR | Female WHR |
|---|---|---|
| Low risk | Below 0.90 | Below 0.80 |
| Moderate risk | 0.90 - 0.99 | 0.80 - 0.84 |
| High risk | 1.0 and above | 0.85 and above |
Worked example
For a male with an 85cm waist and 100cm hip measurement:
WHR = 85 / 100 = 0.85 (Low risk)
Measure waist circumference at the narrowest point (usually just above the belly button) and hip circumference at the widest point around the buttocks for the most consistent, comparable result over time.
