What BMR measures

Basal Metabolic Rate is the number of calories your body burns at complete rest, just to keep vital functions running: breathing, circulation, cell repair, and maintaining body temperature. It does not include any calories burned through movement, digestion, or exercise.

Worked example

For a 30-year-old male weighing 70kg at 175cm tall:

BMR = 10 x 70 + 6.25 x 175 - 5 x 30 + 5 = 1648.8 kcal/day

Frequently asked questions

How is BMR different from daily calorie needs? BMR is just the resting baseline - to estimate total daily calorie needs, this number is multiplied by an activity factor (typically 1.2 for sedentary up to 1.9 for very active) to account for movement, exercise, and daily activity on top of resting metabolism.

Why does the formula differ by sex? Men typically carry more lean muscle mass relative to body weight than women, and muscle tissue burns more calories at rest than fat tissue, which is reflected in the different constant terms of the equation.
