Why "One Extra" Makes a Real Difference
Veterinary behaviorists widely recommend one litter box per cat plus one additional box, reducing territorial conflicts and guaranteeing every cat has an available, unclaimed option even if another cat is currently using or has recently used a different box.
Placement Matters as Much as Count
Simply meeting this recommended count isn't enough on its own - spreading boxes across multiple locations in the home, rather than clustering them all in one room, is equally important for reducing competition and giving more territorial cats a sense of separate, accessible options.
