Pet Weight Loss Calorie Target Calculator

Pet Weight Loss Calorie Target Calculator

Helping a pet reach a healthier weight? This calculator estimates a starting daily calorie target using a standard veterinary nutrition scaling method.

Target Calories = Current Calories x (Target Weight / Current Weight)^0.75

Example

Currently eating 600 calories/day at 20 lbs, targeting 16 lbs:

Weight Ratio = 0.800 → Target = 600 x 0.800^0.75 ≈ 508 calories/day

Why the 0.75 Exponent, Not a Straight Ratio

This uses metabolic body weight scaling (raising the weight ratio to the power of 0.75), a standard veterinary nutrition method reflecting that resting energy needs don't decrease in direct proportion to body weight - a pet at 80% of its current weight doesn't need exactly 80% of its current calories.

Always Confirm With a Veterinarian

This is a general starting-point estimate, not a personalized medical recommendation - a veterinarian can account for the pet's breed, age, activity level, and any underlying health conditions before finalizing an actual weight-loss feeding plan.
