A Cage Sized for Perching Isn't Sized for Flying
Bird cage sizing guidance is usually written for a bird that can perch comfortably, hop between perches, and flap without hitting the bars — not necessarily one that can fully extend its wings or take a short flight indoors. Minimum footprint recommendations differ enormously by species group, and a cage that's adequate for a budgie is dangerously undersized for a macaw. This calculator starts from published avicultural minimums by species group and then cross-checks against the bird's actual wingspan when you provide it.
The Formula
Wingspan check: minimum side length ≥ 2 × Wingspan
Recommended footprint = max(base minimum, 2 × wingspan)
The 2×-wingspan rule ensures the bird can fully extend both wings in at least one direction without touching the bars — a welfare consideration separate from simply having enough floor space to perch and move.

Where This Matters
- Adopting a new bird — checking the minimum footprint before buying a cage avoids the common mistake of undersizing for a larger species group.
- Individual birds with a large wingspan — within a species group, individual wingspan varies; entering the actual measured wingspan can push the recommended footprint above the group's base minimum.
- Upgrading housing — comparing a current cage's dimensions against the calculated minimum quickly flags whether an upgrade is overdue.
