Formula
12 weeks or younger: Adult Weight ~= Weight at 12 weeks x 2
Over 12 weeks: Adult Weight ~= (Current Weight / Current Age in Weeks) x 52
Example
A 16-week-old puppy weighing 10 lbs:
Estimated Adult Weight = (10/16) x 52 = ~32.5 lbs
Why This Is Only a Rough Estimate
Growth patterns vary enormously by breed - small breeds often reach their adult size within 9-12 months, while large and giant breeds can continue filling out well into their second year, meaning this simple linear projection is far less reliable for breeds at either extreme.
Breed-Specific Growth Charts Are More Reliable
For a more accurate projection, breed-specific puppy growth charts (widely available for common breeds) account for typical growth curves far better than a single general formula can.
