Why Two Quotes for the Same Breed Can Look So Different
Pet insurance premiums aren't priced off a single number the way a flat annual fee might be — insurers stack several multipliers on top of a species base rate: the pet's age, the breed's inherent risk profile, how comprehensive the coverage is, and the deductible and reimbursement percentage chosen. Two owners insuring the same breed can land on very different monthly premiums purely because of deductible and coverage-tier choices. This calculator builds up an estimate the same way, multiplier by multiplier, so it's clear which choices are actually driving the cost.
The Formula
Deductible Factor = 500 ÷ Deductible
Reimbursement Factor = Reimbursement % ÷ 80
Monthly Premium = Base Rate × Age Factor × Breed Risk Factor × Coverage Factor × Deductible Factor × Reimbursement Factor
The species base rates in this model are $45/month for dogs and $28/month for cats. Breed risk factors run 0.85 (low), 1.0 (medium), 1.35 (high); coverage factors run 0.4 (accident only), 1.0 (accident & illness), 1.5 (comprehensive + wellness). Premiums rise about 4% per year of age above one year, and a lower deductible or higher reimbursement percentage both push the premium up.
