Why Very High Utilization Is a Warning Sign, Not a Goal

Utilization rates consistently above roughly 85% are commonly flagged as a burnout risk indicator - they leave little slack for unplanned work, meetings, training, or recovery time, which compounds into decreased quality and increased turnover over time if sustained.

The Target Isn't 100%

Most project management and resourcing guidance targets a healthy sustained utilization range well below 100% - treating 100% utilization as an operational goal, rather than an occasional peak, is a common resourcing mistake that leads to burnout and reduced long-term output.
