Every Project Has One Path That Sets the Deadline

Not every task on a project timeline is equally urgent — some have slack, and one specific sequence of dependent tasks actually determines the earliest the whole project can finish. These ten calculators cover scheduling and tracking math for projects.

Finding the Critical Path, Step by Step

  1. List every task with its duration and dependencies. Note which tasks cannot start until another specific task finishes.
  2. Map out every possible path through the task network from project start to project finish, following the dependency chains.
  3. Add up the duration of each complete path. Some paths will be much shorter than others, since they may run in parallel with longer chains.
  4. The longest path is the critical path. It sets the minimum possible project duration — delaying any task on this specific path delays the entire project, while delays on shorter paths often do not, as long as they stay within their available slack.
